Getting around in Thailand

Getting around Bangkok
Within Bangkok you easily can move around with the local buses in different price ranges for the luxury you wish. You don't have time to get frustrated with buses not showing up as there is almost a bus every few minutes. Sometimes it is hard to read the Thai signs, but stepping in can bring you to some unusual places. Taxis are often a pain in the head. Driving on the back seat away is like giving yourself over to the enemy. Of course there are good ones, but by stepping in we highly recommend that you should know the way or bring the Tom Tom to avoid endless around driving. Bangkok is well covered with the Bangkok Sky Train (BTS) and the Underground system (MRT). Don't ask a Thai where the sky train is as they are not familiar with that word. Ask for Rot Fai fa instead and you will probably find it. The BTS and MRT runs daily between 6 AM and 12 midnight with frequent service throughout the day. It is forbidden to take food onto the platforms and don't cross the line because the whistle blower will attack your peaceful mind.

Getting around Thailand
From various bus stations in Bangkok you can leave to all destinations in Thailand. Be careful that you take the right bus as there are privately operated buses that triple your travel time. There are different price ranges. It is better to choose your own destination than follow the person's friendly asking you where you want to go. The 24 seat coaches to Phuket are a pleasant ride where you can stretch your legs almost in the back of the head of the person in front, but it is worth the pay. Trains are an experience in themselves. If you travel to the North traveling by train is usually safer than by bus. When you choose to go to the South of Thailand we recommend you to go by bus. The blue and white buses are the best and fastest. Avoid the aluminium coloured and red buses. You will get grow old in these buses. Personally I would recommend you to avoid the minivans from Bangkok to close around destinations around Thailand. Lots of accidents happen here with reckless driving or drivers popping up with shopping bags full of energy drinks that makes them Superman.

Business Hours
Thailand generally offers longer opening hours in the tourist destinations including Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Koh Samui. Companies work mostly from Monday until Friday from 8:30 - 5:30 PM while the Thai government organizations close at different times than in most developed countries around the world.

Banking hours
The banks in Thailand open 8AM and close at 3:30 PM. In the numerous shopping malls that Thailand counts are open on the weekends except Thailand holidays. Currency exchange outlets are spread over the entire country, open in the evenings and the weekends. ATM machines can be found on almost every corner of the street. Even more developed nations have less ATM machines to access than in Thailand. Be aware that when you exchange money that you compare between the different booths. Sometimes it helps to walk away from the busy tourist areas to a local area as better rates are given.

Clinics and doctors' surgeries
Growing medical tourism and excellent services are provided in the private and government hospitals in Thailand. In the private hospitals the staff communicate in English. The staff appreciates that you come and welcomes you with a warm welcome. Emergency rooms are 24 hours, but for doctor's appointments usually between 8AM and 6PM. Bangkok hospital has hospitals around the country. A smaller private hospital is based in Ekkamai on Sukhumvit Road, is less crowdy and provides excellent service at a lower cost. The doctors prefer to sell you medicines that can almost fill a shopping bag. It saves costs if you take the doctor's receipt and buy the medicines outside the hospital.

Shopping in Thailand
Stores and shops in Thailand are open seven days a week, usually from 10AM until 10 PM. 7 eleven and family mart convenient stores are on almost every corner on the street added with ATM machines. Here you can also purchase tickets for concerts and telephone cards. Alcohol is usually not sold between 2 to 5 p.m during day time. Most of these stores depending where you are in Thailand are open 24 hours per day. Supermarkets are typically open seven days a week from 10am to 9pm.

Museums and Galleries
Thailand is known for its beautiful museums. Do some research and find the often for tourists hidden treasures. EZY-Go will work hard to make this information accessible in the form of packages. The museums in Thailand and the galleries are usually open between 9 AM and 4 PM daily. Avoid frustration and check before you go to the museum or to the gallery the opening times.

Night clubs
The people of Thailand like to relax and party. The discotheques are open every night. The closing times very much depend on the sort of venue. Bars will close at midnight while the larger discotheques must shut down at 2AM. For those travellers knowing their way around Thailand can party far beyond sunrise. Hidden away in buildings on higher level floors or basements it is good fun and party time.

Post Offices
The Thailand post systems are reliable and efficient. You can send your mail normally or by express mail service. If you choose for the first option, don't be surprised when your family thanks you for your postcard from Thailand one year after your return. The post office are branded Thailand post office in red and white colours. They usually close 3:30 PM but very much depends on the location with some closing at 6PM. Saturdays they are open from 8 AM until 1 PM except public holidays in Thailand.

Restaurants
Restaurants operating hours are flexible in Thailand. The people of Thailand love to eat. Surprisingly they do not get fat at all from this tasty foods that can be found on every street corner. Most of these places open until midnight while others stay open well past midnight or the whole night. On Sukhumvit Road near Thong Lor area in the walking direction of Ekkamai you can be found a local restaurant. Don't go there for the views or decoration. The restaurant welcomes Thais from all over the city and is not known by the foreign travellers. While you are sitting and eating this yummy food there is a high chance that you breathe the car's exhaust, but it is definitely worth that unhealthy experience.
